Extreme rainfall, flooding and climate change call for robust water systems. We help water professionals gain insight into risks and make water systems more robust against extreme rainfall and flooding.
Insight into risks, a clear view of measures
ExplanationWhere can flooding occur? How does the water system function during extreme rainfall? What are the consequences of a flood, and which measures are effective? To answer these questions, insight is needed into the interplay between rainfall, water system, flood defences, layout and use of an area.
Through water system analyses, assessments and flood studies, we map out bottlenecks, risks and uncertainties. We translate the results into clear visualisations and concrete actionable perspectives. In this way, we help water managers make well-founded choices for a more robust water system, a safe living environment and good preparation for extreme situations.

Our approach: the question determines the model and the solution
We start with the issue and the decision that needs to be made. Together with the client, we determine what information is needed and which approach fits. That could be strategic advice, a water system analysis, a model study or a digital water service.
We are independent of models and platforms. Depending on the question, we work with hydrological, hydrodynamic, GIS or AI models, including machine learning models for flood forecasting. We deliberately choose the appropriate scale and level of detail: from local to international, and from 1D to 2D or 3D. Not more complicated than necessary, but reliable enough to answer the question properly.
In doing so, we combine knowledge of hydrology and water safety with digitalisation and close collaboration with the client. We pay great attention to explainability and make results accessible with maps, animations and interactive viewers. In this way, complex analyses become understandable and usable for policy, management and crisis management.

Complex analyses, understandable results
QualityA model study only has value when its outcomes are understood and used. That is why we don't just deliver calculations but also show clearly where water nuisance or flooding can occur, how deep the water can get, how quickly an area is reached and which functions or objects are affected.
With interactive viewers, maps, animations and clear reports, we make results accessible to hydrologists, policymakers, managers and crisis organisations. Together, we translate these insights into measures and actionable perspectives for the short and long term.
We also ensure that models and digital applications are up to date, maintainable and reusable. With knowledge transfer, training and professional support, we help organisations use and further develop the results independently.
Frequently asked questions
Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our approach. Is your question not listed? Then please get in touch.
We are model- and platform-independent. The question, the required accuracy, the available data and the scale determine which method is most suitable. That can be a GIS analysis, a hydrological or hydrodynamic model, a 1D, 2D or 3D model, or an AI or machine learning model. We have experience with most modelling tools, such as D-HYDRO, SOBEK, 3Di, Ribasim, HEC-RAS, MODFLOW, RTC-Tools and PCR-Glob.
Yes. Where possible, we build on existing data, models and information systems. We first assess their quality, timeliness and suitability. We then decide together whether updating, extension, linking or a new model setup is needed.
We translate results into clear maps, animations, factsheets and interactive viewers. This allows users to compare scenarios and see where water will arrive, how deep it will get, how quickly it spreads and which measures have an effect. In this way, results become usable for decision-making and communication.
Yes. We develop digital services that combine current measurements, weather forecasts, hydrological models and information about flood defences. Where this adds value, we also use machine learning. We translate the outcomes into warnings and actionable perspectives for water managers and crisis organisations.
Yes. With Modelling as a Service, you can run model calculations quickly and at scale in a cloud environment managed by us. This makes it possible to run large numbers of scenarios or forecasts in parallel, without having to manage computing servers yourself. HydroLogic provides the infrastructure, updates and support. Calculations can be started via a web environment or API, and the results are stored centrally.
Would you like to know where the vulnerabilities in your water system lie, what consequences a flood can have, or which measures have the most effect? We'd be glad to think it through with you.Laura Janssen
