HydroLogic helps water professionals understand how water moves through an area and which processes shape the water system. With data, system analyses and models, we translate hydrological knowledge into well-founded choices and practical solutions.
Truly understanding the water system
ExplanationWater moves constantly between the atmosphere, soil, groundwater and surface water. Precipitation, evaporation, infiltration, seepage, downward seepage, groundwater abstraction and water management influence one another. A change in one component can therefore have consequences in another place or at a later moment.
To tackle water problems effectively, it must first be clear how the system functions. Where does the water come from? Where does it flow to? Which processes are decisive? And what causes groundwater nuisance, drought, desiccation or water shortages?
We have the passion to truly understand how this works. We combine measurements, local knowledge, hydrological analyses and models into a coherent picture of the system. From that insight, we develop solutions that fit the area, the users and the decisions that need to be made.
Our approach: from data to system understanding
We start with the issue and the information needed to make a decision. Together with the client, we then develop a conceptual picture of the water system. We investigate which processes and interactions are decisive and which data, analyses or models are needed to understand them properly.
We use measurements, time series analyses, water balances, GIS analyses and hydrological models to test hypotheses and make missing knowledge visible. In doing so, we always look at the interrelationship between groundwater, surface water, soil, land use and meteorological conditions.
We are model- and platform-independent. Depending on the question, we work with, for example, MODFLOW–MetaSWAP, D-HYDRO, SOBEK, 3Di, Ribasim or other suitable models and analysis methods. We do not automatically choose the most detailed model, but the approach that gives a reliable, explainable and usable answer.

From system knowledge to working solutions
QualityA hydrological analysis only has value when it helps to make better choices. That is why we deliver more than just data, maps or model results. We explain which processes determine the outcomes, what uncertainties exist and what this means for the task at hand.
With maps, visualisations and interactive viewers, we make complex relationships understandable for hydrologists, policymakers, managers and other stakeholders. Together, we translate the system insight into concrete measures and actionable perspectives.
This can lead to adjusting water level management, improving drainage or infiltration, changing a groundwater abstraction, restoring the sponge function, or a different layout of an area. In this way, a thorough understanding of the water system forms the basis for solutions that are substantively well-founded, explainable and practically applicable.
Frequently asked questions
Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our approach. Is your question not listed? Then please get in touch.
Yes. Groundwater and surface water are closely linked and usually cannot be considered separately. Depending on the question, we also include soil, land use, meteorology, water quality and human intervention in the analysis.
We work with, among others, MODFLOW–MetaSWAP, D-HYDRO, SOBEK, 3Di and Ribasim, supplemented with GIS, statistical and data analysis methods. We are not tied to a single model or platform. The question, the area, the available data and the required accuracy determine which approach fits best.
We make missing and uncertain data explicit. We use quality checks, time series analyses, sensitivity analyses and comparison with local knowledge to determine what the uncertainty means for the conclusions. Where necessary, we advise on additional measurements or improvement of the monitoring network.
